This is for a project I have to do: do you think that humans are on this earth to help others or should people depend on themselves? Is there any specific time which would be an exception?
This is for a project I have to do: I changed my question a little. my new question is do you need help to achieve your goals or are you able to succeed without any help from others? also, does helping others help you become a better person or have a better life in heaven or after death? I am interested to hear your answers. thanks! |

Everyone needs help at some time in their life but only a short time and then they should be on their own

There are always exceptions.
I think people shuold do the best they can to help themselves. I mean, a little ambition goes a long way. But it was César Chávez who said "we cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about our community." I say that trying to depend on ourselves only goes so far. Ultimately we are all here to help one another. And our successes should also be to leave the world better than when we found it. |

I think we are here to help each other. but to truely help someone you teach them how to do it themselves. Feed a man a fish and he will be hungry again tomorrow. Teach a man to fish and he will be able to eat everyday. But there are those in this world who are unable to care for themselves and we need to help them.

Well, people may think that were here to help others but in my case were here to take care of ourselves.Think about this,if we lived by ourselves and we were really hungry but were laying in the bed,we couldn't just call our sister in another state and tell her to come get me out of the bed so i can get me something to eat.I would have to do that for myself. We can take care of our selves.Yes,in a time bad enough, that would be an exception.Think about being really old and having a daughter, but your in really bad health. If you couldn't get out of your bed,you might have to count on her for help.

We should not depend completely or for a long time on the help of others. We should be self-reliant to the maximum extent possible.
When we start leaning on each other, we forget how to stand on our own two feet. |

You should help but they do need to learn to be self-reliant, you can't help them with everything.

you should teach people how to be self sufficient. If they need help give it to them.

I believe the Judeo-Christian ethic is to do both: Be self-reliant AND help people. One is usually more capable of helping others if he is more capable of helping himself.
People, when helping others, are usually pretty good judges of when help is "enough" and "too much", which is why it is better for individuals and small groups of individuals (churches) to help people rather than have any government agency do it. The only time it wouldn't be right to "help" another is when the "help" would be harmful. Giving money to winos, for instance. Many people who give money to bums on the street corner -- the "Vietnam veteran, God bless" types -- falls into this category, in my opinion. |
